A Disney cruise can be the trip of a lifetime. But it can also be one of the most expensive trips. That’s why travel protection is so important. Trip insurance can cover the cost of your trip in the event of an unforeseen circumstance like losing a job or a medical emergency. It can also help cover lost or stolen luggage.
Whether you are planning a Walt Disney World, Disneyland or Adventures by Disney vacation or a Disney Cruise Line vacation, there is an optional travel protection plan available for your booking. It is offered through DCL and the company behind it, Allianz Global Assistance. The plan covers your prepaid and nonrefundable costs for the trip. It also includes a 24-hour hotline and coverage for trip cancellation, baggage delay, and emergency medical expenses. The plan is 8% of your trip fare per person, and you can purchase it at the same time you book everything else through DCL or your agent.
It’s important to remember that the plan doesn’t just cover your cruise but all pre-paid elements of your trip, including airfare, hotel and rental car. It also provides for a future cruise credit equal to 75% of the non-refundable portion of your trip if you have to cancel your plans due to covered reasons.
But the question is, does this plan really protect you? And is it worth the extra cost? Depending on the age of your clients and the length and destination of their trip, it might be. However, it is important to note that many other travel insurers price their plans based on age and coverage. So for example, an older client might find that purchasing a separate plan with Allianz is cheaper than getting the flat-rate option through Disney.
What is Covered on the Disney Cruise Line Travel Protection Plan?
The Disney Vacation Protection Plan is underwritten by Allianz Global Assistance and offers a combination of travel insurance benefits and an emergency hotline service provided by CareFree Travel. The plan is available to all guests booked on a Disney Cruise or package with Walt Disney World, Disneyland or Aulani.
For the cruise element of the plan, if your client needs to cancel their trip for a reason covered by the policy, the plan will reimburse them for their prepaid and nonrefundable cruise costs and will give them a credit to use toward a future Disney Cruise. This is similar to the Cancel for Any Reason feature that’s available with most Disney packages, but for a cruise.
Baggage loss and delay coverage will reimburse your client up to $2,000 for items that are lost, stolen or destroyed while their bags are in transit en route to their departure port or destination. The plan also includes emergency medical/dental coverage in case of a medical emergency or accident during their trip.
