What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking triamterene,
- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to triamterene, sulfa drugs, or any other drugs.
- tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially captopril (Capoten); digoxin (Lanoxin); enalapril (Vasotec); indomethacin (Indocin); lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid); and medications for arthritis, diabetes, or high blood pressure; potassium supplements; and vitamins. Do not take this medicine if you are taking amiloride or spironolactone.
- tell your doctor if you have or have ever had diabetes, gout, or kidney or liver disease.
- tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking triamterene, call your doctor immediately.
- if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking triamterene.
- you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
- remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
- plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Triamterene may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

Muscle Cramps
I also have been taking triamterene for water retention from open heart surgery but I only use the potasium pill when the cramps in the legs etc. present themselves. I also found that I have been perscribed 2 per day and it seems to work the same if I only take one.

Muscle Cramps
I've been prescribed Triamterene for water retention from estrogen for menopause. I've been taking for 2 weeks and suddenly have developed severe upper back/shoulder muscle contraction. Any possibility this is a side effect? Thanks.

cardizem CD and fluid retention
I am also on 360 mgs of Cardizam and 400 mgs lopressor.I have alot of fluid retention as well so my doctor prescribed triamterene&HCTZ pills to take once a day.They really help me alot!
