Brand name(s): DesyrelŪ
Studies have shown that children and teenagers who take antidepressants ('mood elevators') such as trazodone are more likely to think about harming or killing themselves or to plan or try to do so than children who do not take antidepressants. Children younger than 18 years of age should not normally take trazodone. If your child's doctor has prescribed trazodone for your child, you should watch his or her behavior very carefully, especially at the beginning of treatment and any time his or her dose is increased or decreased. Your child may develop serious symptoms very suddenly, so it is important to pay attention to his or her behavior every day. Call your child's doctor right away if he or she experiences any of these symptoms: new or worsening depression; thinking about harming or killing him- or herself or planning or trying to do so; extreme worry; agitation; panic attacks; difficulty falling or staying asleep; irritability; aggressive behavior; acting without thinking; severe restlessness; frenzied abnormal excitement, or any other sudden or unusual changes in behavior.Your child's doctor will want to see your child often while he or she is taking trazodone, especially at the beginning of his or her treatment.Your child's doctor may also want to speak with you or your child by telephone from time to time. Be sure that your child keeps all appointments for office visits or telephone conversations with his or her doctor.Talk to your child's doctor about the risks of giving trazodone to your child.

trazodone + side effects
Hi, my Dr. recently put me on 50 mg of Trazodone. I was depressed and couldn't sleep. THe Trazodone has been great because I sleep really good and don't wakeup feeling groggy. But the medicine makes me really constipated! I have been taking stool softeners at night but no help. I know its kind of weird to bring this up but if anyone has suggestions about this it would be appreciated.
I also take Zoloft in the morning and have been on it for 15 years with no side effects.
Thanks, JJ

The effects of taking Trazodone as a sleeping pill.
I am a 26 year old male. I took Trazodone from age 13 - 21 due to the fact that I was a very wild, active ADHD teenager, staying out late w/ friends and would stay up for days at a time without sleep. I quickly developed a sleeping disorder and needed to wake up in the mornings rather than fall asleep during so I started taking my Mom's Trazodone and worked very well. My Psychiatrist later prescribed 50mg Trazodone for myself and was really satisfied with the results. Trazodone is awesome! I didn't suffer any side effects but on 2 occasions while needing the restroom after waking during the night, I fell asleep while walking back to my room, both times collapsed very hardly into the hall walkway but didn't break anything! I developed a huge dependancy on Trazodone which was never a major concern for me but though I loved Trazodone alot and loved taking it, I thought alot about the years ahead of me and thought well, I don't want to take it for the rest of my life so I decided to make an attempt to quit but failed terribly. My Psychiatrist prescribed me Remeron to help me go to sleep and to help ease the irritability, discomfort and the massive crankiness. At that time when I was 21, I would have to take 150mg of Trazodone a night which to me is alot to have to take but Remeron did help after about a week of taking it. A little after 3 months of taking Remeron, my Psychiatrist prescribed me Celexa and less than 3 months later, I was off Celexa and off Trazodone completely. I was able to fall asleep at night with out any problems what so ever. I am now 26 and have not taken any medications since. Quitting Trazodone was the hardest and most painful thing i've ever had to go throught but Trazodone will always have a special place in my heart! I guess an 8 year addiction will make me think that way but like an old friend, it was there when I needed it!
P.S. as for my Mother, she is still taking Trazodone to this day and refuses to live without it. My Mother had been taking Trazodone now for a lil' over 15 years. She's doing great! After 15 years of taking Trazodone and is currently 68 years of age, healthwise Trazodone has not caused her to have any kind of damage as a result of 15 years and as for myself after an 8 year dependancy, I have no minor or serious health problems due to Trazodone and currently doing great without it!
