I'm hoping that other folks having edema (water retention/swelling of the ankles/feet) are going in to their MDs to have this checked out. I have been on a beta-blocker (pindolol) for 6 months. I'm 43 years old and newly diagnosed with slight hypertension. My MD told me to watch out for signs of edema, and report them as soon as they occur. Last night when I noticed this swelling, I talked to an advise nurse @ my HMO and she was insistent that I go to Urgent Care. The concern was for the development of pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) which signal congestive heart failure. While the MD *did* hear the 'squeaks' indicative of fluid in the lungs, subsequent chest x-ray revealed nothing problematic. I was advised to promptly consult with my primary care MD to switch OFF the beta blocker (which slows the heart and causes it to be less efficient... evidenced by the edema).

Valsarten : side effects?
hello there, just to let you know that valsartan is not an ace inhibitor......
It works further down the raas system, so that is why there is less side effects than say ace inhibitors..
All drugs that lower your blood pressure are great if you have high blood pressure, as this can trigger other more serious conditions such as stroke, mi, and also diabetes....
so as long as your blood pressure is being kept in check it is a good thing.....
valsartan is also known as an ANGIOTENSIN RECEPTOR BLOCKER.....and if the drug is working for you that is great.....

My Cardiologist prescribed Metoprolol as a beta-blocker along with Rythmol to control atrial fibrilation. A nice balance has been found and the purpose is being met. The reduction in blood pressure was a welcome side-effect. Then my Urologist prescribed Terazosin to relax my bladder / prostate. That too works as intended, but my blood pressure has dropped to an alarming level--recently 105/56. My GP and two specialists debate. I wait.
