Why is this medication prescribed?
Paroxetine tablets, suspension (liquid) and extended-release (long-acting) tablets are used to treat depression, panic disorder (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks), and social anxiety disorder (extreme fear of interacting with others or performing in front of others that interferes with normal life). Paroxetine tablets and oral solution are also used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over), generalized anxiety disorder (excessive worrying that is difficult to control), and posttraumatic stress disorder (disturbing psychological symptoms that develop after a frightening experience). Paroxetine extended-release tablets are also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD, physical and psychological symptoms that occur before the onset of the menstrual period each month). Paroxetine is in a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.

I have just been put on paroxetine and am not sure if I like it. If any one who has taken before could please let me know how long it took before you felt better and what your side affects were.

Paroxetine
I have been on paroxetine at the age of 28. I had been suffering from panic attacks, social phobia and depression since the age of 14, had never taken anti-depressants before in my life and the tranquillisers were no bullet cure. In my experience the first two weeks have been the worst. I experienced total insomnia, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, neck cramps and felt light headed. But from day one I stopped crying (yes, I used to cry every day) and gradually, while the side effects became more tollerable, the good bits came in. I started to socialize more, I felt good for the first time since infancy and started to enjoy life again.
Now, 8 years on I am still on paroxetine 20mg. I did stop a few times. Every time the illness came back within a few months. Also other things that I did not associate to the illness , such as menstrual disorders and slow digestion came back. At present I am fine on paroxetine, I live a fulfilling life and I am not planning to interrupt the cure any time soon.

Suicidality.
Recenty I've been prescribed paroxetine for depression. However, I've never had suicidal thoughts or anything like that, will taking this cause me to have them?
