What side effects can this medication cause?

You should know the symptoms of low and high blood sugar and what to do if you have them.

If you have any of the symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), eat or drink a food or beverage with sugar in it, such as hard candy or fruit juice, and call your doctor immediately. The symptoms of low blood sugar include:

  • shakiness
  • dizziness
  • fast pulse or heartbeat
  • sweating
  • confusion
  • blurred vision
  • headache
  • numbness or tingling of the mouth
  • weakness
  • fatigue
  • pale color
  • sudden hunger

If you have any of the symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), call your doctor immediately. The symptoms of high blood sugar include:

  • thirst
  • dry mouth
  • tiredness
  • flushing
  • dry skin
  • frequent urination
  • increased appetite or feelings of hunger
  • trouble breathing

Although side effects from insulin glargine are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • redness, swelling, pain, and itching at the injection site
  • changes in the feel of your skin, skin thickening (fat build-up), or a little depression in the skin (fat breakdown)

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • seizures
  • loss of consciousness
  • exaggerated sunburn
  • difficulty speaking or moving
  • skin rash or hives all over the body
  • itching or redness
  • swelling of hands or feet
  • difficulty swallowing
  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing (trouble breathing)
  • fast pulse
  • low blood pressure
  • sweating

If your glucose is often high, you can develop a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. This can be life threatening. If your blood tests show high amounts of glucose or your urine tests show high amounts of glucose or acetone, or if you have signs of ketoacidosis, you need to call your doctor immediately. Do not use insulin glargine to treat diabetic ketoacidosis. The symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis include:

  • sleepiness
  • flushed (red) face
  • thirst
  • loss of appetite
  • fruity odor on your breath
  • heavy breathing
  • fast pulse

Glyburide/Metform 2.5 Twice a day
My understanding is that Glyburide is used to flog the Pancreas to make it produce more insulin. However, from what I've heard (you should research it yourself) is that the bodies own immune system turns on the pancreas and distroys it in type 1 diabetes. With no pancreas to flog, I cannot see why your father would have been on Glyburide. But there may be other causes and results to type 1 diabetes. Metformin on the other hand works at getting cells to utilize the insulin that already exists in the body in type 2 or insulin resistant diabetes.. I've included a link to Dr. Koop.com on Lactic Acidosis -

web md dot com also has some info but not much..

How effective has Glipizide Been For You
Good Evening, About six months ago, I was surprisingly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was originally put on insulin when I was hospitalized. After two months, I was given an oral medication called Glipizide and was even sent home on that medication. I have found the results from this medication far more successful than when I was on an insulin shot. I would enjoy corresponding with others who are on this medication. Did you experience any side effects or how succedssful has it been with you? Thank You-Tony [Cool]

Glyburide/Metform 2.5 Twice a day
2 weeks ago I lost my father, 63 from what the ICU doctors called Lactic acidosis which is addressed in the first line of the "Before taking this medication" section of his prescription. My father was diagnosed with Type 1 about 12 years ago and been managing his blood sugar with 2 insulin shots a day. I'm not sure if it's common to prescribe this drug along with insulin shots for Type 1 patients but it clearly states on the drug website and the precautions it should not be used to treat Type 1 patients. My question to the forum is have you heard of using both to control sugar levels?

2 yr therapy / Prednisone 60mg to treat Temporal Arteritis
I have been on Prednisone 60mg for 2 months now. My doctor said its a 2 year long treatment for Temporal Arteritis. I have bad swelling throughtout my day and night. Yet, my family Doctor and Specialist agree I need to continue. The drug really aggrivates glucose levels in a diabetic. I am taking alot of insulin and it seems like a losing battle. The side effects of this medication feel toxic. Does anyone else have a lot of problems with this drug?
