| i don't understand how a provera can be used for both amenorrhea (the absence of menstrual periods)and abnormal bleeding from the uterus caused by hormonal imbalance. i would think that using for absense of periods would start it and using for abnormal bleeding would get it to stop. i have used this for absense of period and had no problem. then doctor put me on the patch, took that for a month, did have my period. the problem is that it is WAYYY too heavy. now the doctor gave it to me again. i don't understand how it can be used for both. to me this does opposite things. anyone else confused? <IMG title="" alt=[Confused] src="confused.gif" border=0> |

Medroxyprogesterone is used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding, promote menstrual cycles, and to treat symptoms of the menopause.
Progestins are responsible for changes in the mucus and inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) during the second half (secretory phase) of the menstrual cycle. Progestins prepare the endometrium for implantation of the embryo, and once an embryo implants in the endometrium, i.e., pregnancy occurs, progestins help maintain the pregnancy. At high doses, progestins also prevent ovulation (release of the egg from the ovary). Progestins were first isolated in 1933, and progesterone itself was synthesized in the 1940s. |
