What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking doxepin,
- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to doxepin or any other drugs.
- tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking or have taken within the last 2 weeks, especially antihistamines; anticoagulants [warfarin (Coumadin)]; cimetidine (Tagamet); estrogens; fluoxetine (Prozac); levodopa (Sinemet, Larodopa); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid); MAO inhibitors [phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate)]; medication for high blood pressure, seizures, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, asthma, colds, or allergies; methylphenidate (Ritalin); muscle relaxants; oral contraceptives; sedatives; sleeping pills; thyroid medications; tranquilizers; and vitamins.
- tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family have or have ever had depression, bipolar disorder (mood that changes from depressed to abnormally excited), or mania (frenzied, abnormally excited mood), or have thought about or attempted suicide. Also tell your doctor if you have or have ever had glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, difficulty urinating, diabetes, seizures, an overactive thyroid gland, or liver, kidney, or heart disease.
- tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking this drug, call your doctor immediately.
- if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking doxepin.
- you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
- remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
- tell your doctor if you use tobacco products. Cigarette smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this drug.
- you should know that your mental health may change in unexpected ways, especially at the beginning of your treatment and any time that your dose is increased or decreased. These changes may occur at any time if you have depression or another mental illness, whether or not you are taking doxepin or any other medication. You, your family, or your caregiver should call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: new or worsening depression; thinking about harming or killing yourself, or planning or trying to do so; extreme worry; agitation; panic attacks; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; aggressive behavior; irritability; acting without thinking; severe restlessness; and frenzied abnormal excitement. Be sure that your family or caregiver knows which symptoms may be serious so they can call the doctor when you are unable to seek treatment on your own.

Doxepin and Bipolar disorder
My doctor wants me to take doxepin and I am bipolar and worry that it might make me manic. Does anyone who is also bipolar have any experience with doxepin? I am on a mood stabilizer, so that should help, but I find my fear of becoming manic is preventing me from starting the doxepin.
Thank you for your input.

Doxepin dosage
Hi,
I have bee taking Insidon (100 mg /day). Now my doctor has prescribed me Doxepin : 10 mg three times plus 25 mg nigths. I think that is too much and I am afraid I will be sleepy all day. I am also afraid of having an epileptic seizure (it always happened to me once, due to an anridepressant, I suppose it was anafranil or tofranil). What do you think? Could I reduce it to only 25 mg night ?

Doxepin linked to breast cancer??????
Hi and help!! Sorry if this sounds desperate but I feel like a drowning woman! I used 50 mg of doxepin for 11 years to cope with an autoimmune disorder. Then, as luck (or bad luck) would have it, I developed invasive breast cancer. It was caught early and the prognosis is good. HOWEVER,
then I found research that implicates long-term use of doxepin in invasive breast cancer. I went off it, just to be safe, but am having a very difficult time without it, and it seemed to be the only medicine that really helped me. Additionally, now I feel like I gave cancer to myself for being on it so long. Does any one know more about this research, or have an opinion? I need my med but am so afraid! may God Bless You.
