How should this medicine be used?

Doxepin comes as a capsule or concentrate (oral liquid) to take by mouth. It is usually taken one to three times a day and may be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take doxepin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Doxepin concentrate (oral liquid) comes with a specially marked dropper for measuring the dose. Ask your pharmacist to show you how to use the dropper. Dilute the concentrate in 4 ounces (120 ml) of water, whole or skim milk, or orange, grapefruit, tomato, prune, or pineapple juice just before taking it. Do not mix it with carbonated beverages (soft drinks). If you take doxepin concentrate and methadone syrup, the two liquids can be mixed together with Gatorade, lemonade, orange juice, Tang, or water but not with grape juice.

Continue to take doxepin even if you feel well. Do not stop taking doxepin without talking to your doctor, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Your doctor probably will want to decrease your dose gradually. This drug must be taken regularly for a few weeks before its full effect is felt.

Your doctor or pharmacist will give you the manufacturer's patient information sheet when you begin treatment with doxepin. Read the information carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions you have.

Doxepin and Bipolar disorder
My doctor wants me to take doxepin and I am bipolar and worry that it might make me manic. Does anyone who is also bipolar have any experience with doxepin? I am on a mood stabilizer, so that should help, but I find my fear of becoming manic is preventing me from starting the doxepin.
Thank you for your input.

Doxepin dosage
Hi,

I have bee taking Insidon (100 mg /day). Now my doctor has prescribed me Doxepin : 10 mg three times plus 25 mg nigths. I think that is too much and I am afraid I will be sleepy all day. I am also afraid of having an epileptic seizure (it always happened to me once, due to an anridepressant, I suppose it was anafranil or tofranil). What do you think? Could I reduce it to only 25 mg night ?

Doxepin linked to breast cancer??????
Hi and help!! Sorry if this sounds desperate but I feel like a drowning woman! I used 50 mg of doxepin for 11 years to cope with an autoimmune disorder. Then, as luck (or bad luck) would have it, I developed invasive breast cancer. It was caught early and the prognosis is good. HOWEVER,
then I found research that implicates long-term use of doxepin in invasive breast cancer. I went off it, just to be safe, but am having a very difficult time without it, and it seemed to be the only medicine that really helped me. Additionally, now I feel like I gave cancer to myself for being on it so long. Does any one know more about this research, or have an opinion? I need my med but am so afraid! may God Bless You.
